Progress of LPI basic technologies: project meeting in May 2025

At the spring meeting of the LPI basic technologies, around 100 researchers from the partner institutions discussed current advances in imaging diagnostics, biological models and AI-supported analytics – with a view to their imminent implementation in clinical applications.

On May 6, 2025, around 100 scientists from the LPI project partners – the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (Leibniz IPHT), the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute (Leibniz HKI), Jena University Hospital (UKJ) and Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU) – came together in the university’s Rosensäle. Researchers from the Research Center Borstel – Leibniz Lung Center were also represented in person. As part of this 7th edition of the regular project meetings of the basic technologies of the Leibniz Center for Photonics in Infection Research (LPI), current developments were presented and jointly developed further.

The work funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) focused on advances in photonic imaging techniques, the development of new biological models and reference materials as well as innovative approaches to AI-supported analytics in networked digital data spaces. The event impressively demonstrated that the LPI’s first basic technologies will soon be available – as a basis for novel diagnostic procedures through to application in clinical environments.

The meeting once again underlined the added value of intensive cross-site collaboration: research institutions, clinics and universities bring their complementary strengths to bear to jointly bring translation into action – from idea to implementation.

Special thanks go to all participating partner institutions for their dedicated contributions and to the coordinators of the institutions for their excellent organization. We look forward to further exchanges in the fall.
