MEDICA 2025 – Trade Fair insights and networking for the LPI

The LPI was represented at this year’s MEDICA in Dusseldorf. At the joint booth of the Free State of Thuringia organized by the LEG Thüringen, the LPI made an appearance as a translation center for photonic innovations.

The Leibniz Center for Photonics in Infection Research (LPI) was at MEDICA from November 17-20, 2025. The international trade fair attracts expert audiences and interested people from around the world to Dusseldorf each year.

As one of the translation centers in the network of Leibniz Health Technologies, the LPI joined the booth of the Landesentwicklungsgesellschaft Thüringen mbH (LEG Thüringen). Many visitors of the trade fair came around, on purpose or by chance, allowing us to connect with people from the field and potential new partnerships. The primary focus was to inform about the LPI’s unique features of the First-in-Patient-Unit (FiPU) and the upcoming laboratory building. They play a central role in translating innovative photonic technologies to clinical applications – the goal of the LPI in fighting infections. The LPI wants to close this gap which is a barrier for many promising research projects and technologies: the transition from proof-of-concept to medical care. The LPI infrastructure is currently under development and starting in 2027, the FiPU will be available for initial point-of-care pilot studies.

As a special highlight, the state secretary of the Thüringer Ministeriums für Wirtschaft, Landwirtschaft & Ländlichen Raum (TMWLLR) Mario Suckert visited our booth. During his tour at the MEDICA, we introduced him to the LPI and were able to get him interested in our plans.

At his visit of the booth, the state secretary Mario Suckert from the TMWLLR got a short insight into the infrastructure of the LPI.

Our takeaways from MEDICA are new impressions and network contacts. We thank all interested people and potential partners for their pleasant exchange, as well as the LEG Thüringen for the organisation of the joint booth. Thanks to all companies sharing the booth with us for a great time together and networking during the breaks!

“Unique and revolutionary”: Jena concept for photonics in infection research receives top marks

The German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat) rated the plans for the “Leibniz Center for Photonics in Infection Research” (LPI) in Jena as very positive, according to the “Report on the science-led assessment of large-scale research infrastructure projects for the National Roadmap” published on Monday, July 17, 2017. From 2018, an open-user center could be created where photonic solutions for diagnostics, monitoring and experimental therapy for infections are researched and developed with industry into functional solutions.

Leibniz Center for Photonics in Infection Research in Jena sets the next course for medical innovations

With the founding of LPI gGmbH on 25.04.2024, the Leibniz Centre for Photonics in Infection Research is entering the next era. The four consortium partners of the new centre – the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (Leibniz IPHT), the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute (Leibniz HKI), the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU) and the University Hospital Jena (UKJ) – have thus taken the decisive step to consolidate the LPI as a globally unique translational infrastructure – as a bridge from research to application. LPI gGmbH will be established as an open-user one-stop agency. It combines all services, technologies and competences under one roof that are required to significantly accelerate the development and transfer of market-ready light-based diagnostic procedures and novel therapeutic approaches for the treatment of infectious diseases.
