LPI basic technologies impress with their progress

For the latest edition of the LPI basic technology meeting on May 21, 2026, nearly 100 participants gathered at the Center for Applied Research (ZAF) in Jena to present their project progress and look at future applications in a clinical context.

Last week, the LPI and its partner institutions, the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology, Jena University Hospital, the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology Hans Knöll Institute, and Friedrich Schiller University Jena, came together for the project meeting of the LPI basic technologies. The penultimate meeting in this context served as an opportunity to share progress updates and engage in discussions.

About 90 reseachers joined at the Center for Applied Research (ZAF) to gain the latest insights into the varied technologies and methods that are currently under development for the LPI. The project topics presented included, among others:

  • Analysis of sepsis via data fusion of photonic and clinical data
  • Molecular assays for rapid and reliable detection of pathogenic funghi and their resistences
  • Sample preparation and preservation as Biobank ressources
  • Multimodal, fiber-optic imaging for label-free, real-time tissue characterization
  • Computational pipelines for optimized data processing and evaluation
  • Determination of virulence of bacterial pathogens as references

The poster session and breaks in between allowed for more in-depth discussions. The meeting highlighted anew how far the projects have progressed due to the motivation and determined work of the involved researchers. Perspectively, validated basic technologies will be available within the LPI infrastructure and help bring innovations from research into clinical application to fight infectious diseases.

We thank all partner institutions for their contributions and idea exchange, and especially the coordinators for the great organisation! Thanks to the InfectoGnostics Research Campus Jena as well for providing the hosting location. We look forward to the final exchange meeting in November 2026.
